IN MEMORIAM

 Richard Swerrun

Ist Dec 1961 – 8thJanuary 2019

The Worcester born actor Richard Swerrun has died at the age of 57.

Best known for his portrayal of Joseph in Bill Kenwright’s long-running hit production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, he was a natural dancer, completing all the Royal Academy of Dance examinations within a few months. After two years at the Doreen Bird College, he appeared in the West End as Principal Singer & Dancer in the musical revue “I” and it’s successor Y” at the Piccadilly Theatre, danced with Arlene Phillips’ “Hot Gossip”, the opening performance of the Deutches Theater Munich backed by the Bluebell Girls and sang with the Pasadena Roof & Syd Lawrence Orchestras. In London and at Manchester Opera House he took over the role of Tony in “West Side Story” and was thrilled to have met Leonard Bernstein who described his performance as “ so emotional.

On the recommendation of Barbara Windsor, he auditioned for Bill Kenwright who immediately cast him as Joseph which he played throughout the UK scooping up sensational reviews and a loyal following.

As a solo singer, he sang in his one-man show round the world including dates at Ronnie Scott’s, the Cunard World Cruises for the Concordia Foundation and sell-out shows on his beloved home turf at Malvern Theatre.

Other musical theatre shows included “Oklahoma” playing Will opposite his friend Bonnie Langford, Bill’s productions of “Whistle Down the Wind”, "Robin Prince of Sherwood” &Scrooge” as well as numerous pantomimes as a perfect Prince Charming. He also co-produced the 50thanniversary tour of “The Boyfriend”.

Ken Russell cast him as Jaeger in his second film about Sir Edward Elgar, this was particularly poignant as his great grandfather William Done was a musical associate of Elgar and organist at Worcester Cathedral.

In recent years, he had rediscovered his flare for Interior Design and passion for antiques which he put to good use, not only to earn a living but to make his own homes so special.

He died of cancer at the Severn Hospice in Shrewsbury with his partner of 28 years, the Conductor David Steadman at his side.

Funeral Service to be held at Emstrey Crematorium on Wednesday 30th January 2019 at 11.30am
