Silver Award Winning Funeral Directors

It was Lucky 13 for Shrewsbury based Funeral Directors AUBREY KIRKHAM FUNERAL DIRECTORS of Frankwell Island in Shrewsbury.

On Thursday 13th,  The Shrewsbury Town Council, Mayor’s Award for Businesses awarded them the Silver Award for business development, Staff Training, Job Creation and the highest levels of Customer Satisfaction and Care, in their area. The judges said “This company continually deliver, perhaps the highest levels of care to families at the time of distress, and it seems that they have through their attitude to training, staff selection and sensitive approach to the needs of bereaved families, found the right way to help people cope”. The judges said “We are so impressed”.
Aubrey Kirkham Funeral Directors were established at the turn of the Century by husband and wife team Ann and Aubrey Kirkham and their eldest daughter Leanne who was presented with her Diploma in Funeral Directing the very following day, at Windsor. The Diploma, is set and run by The National Association for the industry and is only awarded to a handful of students annually. Leanne said “The course was intensive but being involved in our family business, helped me to achieve the status”. It now means that Leanne is a qualified Lady Funeral Director , something she and her parents are proud of, and which should give reassurance to every family selecting this prized family firm to help them through one of life’s most difficult times.
The business which has its funeral homes in Shrewsbury, Four Crosses,   Near Oswestry and the Welshpool borderlands, is proud of its links with Shrewsbury and its Floral excellence. Aubrey’s father in law was the television presenter   Percy Thrower who was also Shrewsbury Parks Superintendent from 1946 with Television, Books and the family garden centre named after him, and Aubrey too is the Past Chairman and Vice President of the Shrewsbury Flower Show, held each August in the Town.
Ann is also continuing to keep the “green Fingered” approach as she opened her Funeral Flower Studios, this week, where Funeral Flowers are a speciality along with floral arrangements for other occasions. The Studio, in a former Coach House has been converted to allow for demonstration evenings and events for groups to enjoy the creation of Floral Excellence. Ann said “this is a wonderful opportunity for the Thrower name to continue to be linked with flowers and entertainment, and I am so pleased just how busy we have become in such a short time.”
The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Business and Community Awards, of which 2010 is the first year of presentation ,recognised standards of Care, Support of Shrewsbury Town’s Floral Excellence and the Training, Development and Recruitment of Staff. It was said in the Judges opinion, “This medium sized family firm are recognised for their standards setting approach to this delicate industry, and the fact that they are members of their Industry Associations which meant a great deal to us”.
The Awards ceremony was held at Shrewsbury Guild Hall which was attended by around two hundred local people, and of course Aubrey Kirkham Funeral Directors have been Award Winners in the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce/Shropshire Star Business of the Year Awards in 2005 and 2009, Aubrey went on to say “We shall need a larger Trophy Cabinet, but it is really nice for us and reassuring  to the families we serve to know that we always Deliver a Superior Standard of Care.
